Hiring Horoscope

It took me under an hour to create my own chatbot powered by my friendly neighborhood Large Language Model.

The barrier of entry is so low that it feels inevitable that the number of chatbots will proliferate. A chatbot will become another common interface just like a website or mobile app.

So how could this affect hiring?

For starters, there will be more no/low code tools used to build chatbots. Think drag and drop website builders but for bots. A simple interface to configure a chatbot, add your own data for training, and then host online. Or maybe the website/blog builders themselves will let you roll out a bot within their tool which auto indexes your content to personalize a bot for your website.

This means simply being able to build a chatbot alone will not be a competitive edge.

Then what will differentiate bots?

The context you give it! As you supply the LLM with more highly relevant and specific data, then it will perform better.

So how does this affect hiring?

My prediction rests on the productization of LLMs/chatbots. If actual data science to build and test models is no longer the barrier, then the pressure will be on data acquisition, enhancement, and quality. Given that these tasks are data engineering related, I imagine the skills of a Data Engineer will only grow in demand.
